The Northeast Environmental Team (NEET), Inc. was founded in January of 1993 as a non-profit corporation. The founders included volunteers and staff members from Haltom City, North Richland Hills, Richland Hills and Watauga. These communities are served by the Birdville Independent School District. NEET welcomes volunteers and is open to anyone concerned about preserving the environment through education. Meetings are held once quarterly, and the fiscal year runs from October 1 through September 30.
NEET members coordinate numerous educational projects throughout the year. A major project completed in 1996 is the development of an outdoor learning center on BISD property. Named the Birdville Environmental Study Center, it is located along Big Fossil Creek near Haltom High School. It features trails, opportunities for water and plant study and a 24- by 36-foot covered pavilion.
Volunteers, and BISD, continue to maintain the trails. The center is open to the public. Educators are encouraged to utilize the facility throughout the school year.
